for them. but the math doesn't add up. president obama hit him with a good line on that. >> obama: for 18 months he has been run on this tax plan, and now five weeks before the election he's saying that his big bold idea is "never mind." >> cenk: well, that's a good line because in fact romney went in and said, what me? i didn't do that. that was nonsense. now on the issue of medicare and cuts to senior citizens here's what romney said. >> romney: neither the president nor i are proposing any changes for any current retirees or near retirees either to social security or medicare. so if you're 60 or around 60 or older, you don't need to listen any further. >> cenk: here's my favorite line from president obama in response to that. >> obama: your 54, 55, you might want to listen because this will effect you. >> cenk: in other words, yeah, when he says, hey senior citizens hey i'm not going to screw you. he's saying 50 and 54-year-olds, i'm going to screw you instead. the fact that the president pointed that out i thought he did a good job responding on medicare. to bring in the discussion on

's like turning now into an urban legend. by the middle of next week, people will say barack obama can't walk down the sidewalk without stumbling. i'm stunned by -- i mean, the republicans are excited, but i'm stunned by how democrats seem to keep getting more depressed every day. i've had people that have never voted republican in their life. >> right. >> saying i may have to do it this year. >> i think there's been that. there's also been a little bit of a back-and-forth about the jobs numbers that have made the republicans look desperate. but yes, overall, i think the debate had a terrible impact for the president and one that i think is surprisingly lasting. >> yeah, why is that? >> well, because a lot of people were watching and because you're wondering why things don't work in washington. and when you see two people go head to head and you see it be so starkly clear stylistically, you kind of wonder if that is brought home. >> that the president's disconnect -- >> yeah. so there's a lot of work to be done in the next debate. i mean, a lot of work. he's going to have to get his ha

interesting story lines today and for the next two weeks is how does the obama campaign react to what happened last night in. >> oh, absolutely. >> we're going to find out. because maybe we're missing something. i can't figure it out. >> listen, i think they'll even admit, mika, that mitt romney had a great night, but they're going to go in. we're talking style here. >> i know. >> because that's what moves debates. they're going to pick apart everything mitt romney said. we're going to see it on 30-second ads. >> and all their inconsistencies. a lot of them. >> there's a lot to pick at now because there's much more specificity on the table, and some of the things romney said last night are vulnerable to attack in new ways, new and effective ways for the president. >> too bad he wasn't attacked last night. joe klein, thank you very much. >> thank you, joe. >>> ahead, chuck todd will join us from the debate site in denver. coming up, senior adviser to the obama campaign, david axelrod. and in a few minutes, senior adviser to the romney campaign, ed gillespie. keep it right here on "morning joe."

obama among likely voters leads by three points, 49 to 46. that's down from a five-point edge that he had in our poll just about three weeks ago. if you also look at the nbc "wall street journal" maris swing state polls, he's pulled even with president obama in the state of florida. that's the biggest swing state, 29 electoral votes. if you go then to virginia, he's also pulled within two points in virginia. he had been down four or five before. the bad news for romney in these three polls is that in ohio, a state that is critical, romney strategists think they have to win florida and ohio to get to 270 electoral votes. he's still down eight percentage points, and what we've seen across these polls is that obama is increasingly competitive with romney on who would do best to handle the economy. but the fact that we've got a little bit of movement nationally and movement in florida and virginia tells me that there's still some play in this electorate, in this contest, and that's the hope for romney going into this debate tonight. >> what do you think happened in florida versus in ohio?
